Community Relations

“Just because you are the loudest doesn’t mean you’re the person who understands.”
John Edwards (Educational leader, author and consultant)
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
1. Articulate organizational purpose and priorities to the community and media;

2. Request and respond to community feedback;

3. Demonstrate the ability to build community consensus;

4. Relate political initiatives to stakeholders, including parental involvement programs;

5. Identify and interact with internal and external publics;
As a Superintendent, communicating with the public the school district's vision and mission is a basic practice.  Four years ago, I began a monthly time of communication with our community called "Chalk Talk."  On the first Wednesday of each month I brought coffee and rolls from two local businesses to our community building where I presented a short PowerPoint presentation and then had a roundtable discussion with community members of all ages and walks of life.  I was accompanied by our Community Liaison for purposes of interpretation as I was racially conscious of needing to be able to communicate with all people in attendance.  This past Fall, the Superintendent, the other Principal and I have continued "Chalk Talks" in a three-month rotation so that all three administrators are visible in the community.

6. Understand and respond to the news media;

7. Promote a positive image of schools and the school district;
Our taxpayers voted Yes/Yes in November 2015.  Our students, staff and families will benefit greatly from this support.  To say thanks, I decided to organize a parade unit for our community's annual celebration, Railroad Days.  This is an evening where thousands of people from all walks of life and backgrounds gather in one place at one time to celebrate what is good in our community.  Saying "thank you" only seemed appropriate.  And we will have fun wearing hard hats, wearing tool belts, carrying shovels and a large banner that says "Thank You!"

8. Monitor and address perceptions about school-community issues;

9. Demonstrate the ability to identify and articulate critical community issues which may impact local education.
During the months leading up to the November 2015 $23,900,000 bond referendum and operating levy votes, the Superintendent presented information to the community at various locations and meetings.  I was present for the vast majority of these, presenting information as appropriate.  As racially conscious leaders, the current Superintendent and I facilitated an all-Spanish version of this presentation as well.  As the time for the vote neared, I gave this same presentation on my own to various civic organizations.
