Communications

"You tell me it's a problem; I tell you we can work on it together."
Coaching Needs document, Leading Forward workshop
COMMUNICATION
1. Formulate and carry out plans for internal and external communications;

2. Demonstrate facilitation skills;

3. Recognize and apply an understanding of individual and group behavior in normal and stressful situations;

4. Facilitate teamwork;
As the $23,900,000 building and renovation project nears, it is imperative as an educational leader that students, staff and community are invested in determining the scope of the project.  While there is a Project Oversight Committee (POC), I have developed a High School Building Team to respond to issues that are particular to that building.  Facilitating these meetings and providing for teamwork is a strength of my leadership.  Carrying that mindset into the Superintendency will be crucial to my success in that role.  To allow for transparency and no secret agenda, I have created a Google Community for students, staff and families to understand this teamwork mentality.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of conflict resolution and problem solving strategies;

6. Make presentations that are clear and easy to understand;
One of the competencies for school administrators is to 'make presentations that are clear and easy to understand."  As I have grown as an administrator I have come to realize the power of simplifying both visually and verbally the messages that I communicate.  Below are three examples of presentations for three different entities.

       Board of Education Report, January 2016 - Board Report
       Chalk Talk (monthly community presentation), May 2016 - Chalk Talk

7. Respond, review, and summarize information for groups;

8. Communicate appropriately (speaking, listening, and writing) for different audiences— students, teachers, parents, community, and other stakeholders;

9. Understand and utilize appropriate communication technology;
I have provided a new energy to our school district in being present on Twitter.  I have also been responsible for updating the Homepage of the district website during the academic year.  Both of these provide information instantly.  The followers on my Twitter account and those who access the district website are varied in age and other demographics.  As a racially conscious Superintendent it is important to note that while there are still some families without internet connection, the fastest and easiest way to communicate with families is through snapshots of information and at the touch of a button.  This past year I heard a presenter say, "Your parents are living on FaceBook, Twitter and the internet; live there with them."

10. Demonstrate knowledge of cultivating positive relationships between and with School Board members;

Each month I present up-to-date and relevant information to the Board of Education.  I have discovered that PowerPoint presentations work best as I can send them to the board members and also post them on the school website for transparency.  As a racially conscious educational leader I invite an interpreter to be with me at these meetings for our Spanish-speaking community members.  We have a bilingual (Spanish/English) board member and she has provided interpretation for reports when necessary as well.

11. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of serving in a lead communicator role.
